Frequently Asked Questions

Is Bumble free to use?
high

Yes, Bumble is free to download and use. It offers optional subscription packages (Bumble Boost & Bumble Premium) and individual paid features like Spotlight and SuperSwipe. However, our sample of recent reviews suggests some users feel key features, like seeing who likes you or using advanced filters, are gated behind paywalls.

How does the 24-hour time limit work?
medium

Bumble has a 24-hour time limit for matches. When you match with someone, the woman (or either person in same-sex matches) must send the first message within 24 hours or the match expires. One reviewer in our sample found this stressful, saying it made them risk missing a match. You can use the 'Extend' feature on one match per day to add another 24 hours.

Is Bumble safe for dating?
high

Bumble emphasizes safety features in its description, including ID Verification, photo and video chat, community guidelines for messages, and a 'share details of your meetup' feature. No reviews in our sample raised specific safety concerns, though the sample is small and entirely negative.

Why do some users say the matching algorithm is bad?
medium

In our sample of recent reviews, 2 out of 5 reviewers reported that the algorithm repeatedly shows profiles similar to ones they have already rejected, making them feel like they are endlessly swiping without finding compatible matches. This is a recurring concern among these reviews.

How to Use

Bumble is a dating app where you create a profile, swipe to match with others, and women message first in opposite-sex matches. (app_description)

Getting Started

Source: app_description_and_user_feedback_noted

  1. Download Bumble from the Google Play Store and create an account.
  2. Build your profile by adding photos, a bio, and answering prompts or linking your Spotify and Instagram accounts.
  3. Go through the ID verification process to make your profile more trustworthy to other users.
  4. Start swiping: swipe right on people you're interested in and left on those you're not.

Key Features (from app listing)

Source: app_description

  • Create a profile with interests, prompts, and linked Spotify account for music bonding.
  • ID Verification to help ensure matches are real people.
  • Video chat and picture sharing with matches.
  • Snooze Mode to hide your profile without losing matches.
  • Optional Bumble Premium subscription for features like seeing who likes you, Advanced Filters, Incognito Mode, and Travel Mode.
Pro Tip: To increase your chances of matching without paying, upload high-quality photos and fill out your prompts with specific details about your hobbies and interests, as the limited bio space makes every word count.

This tip is responsive to the user complaint about limited writing space. It suggests maximizing the available space with specific details to stand out, as per standard dating app advice implied by the app's feature set.

How this content was created

Content type: pattern_analysis_of_user_reviews_and_metadata

AI generated: Yes

Data sources:
  • Google Play user reviews (12-20 preferred; may be smaller if source data is limited per app), January 21, 2025 to August 19, 2025
  • Google Play ratings distribution
  • App Store listing metadata
Limitations:
  • Review samples are not statistically representative of all user sentiment
  • High-engagement negative reviews can overrepresent complaints
  • Claims labeled 'low confidence' are based on single-review observations only
  • No real-world app testing was conducted
  • Feature availability may vary by region, device, and app version
  • Only 5 reviews were available, all from the recent_reviews bucket, all with low ratings. This severely limits the representativeness of the analysis.

No matching algorithm: it makes me swipe through hundreds of profiles similar to ones I've already rejected. The limitation on writing is frustrating—it's hard to say much in the allowed space, so few people manage much useful information. The 24-hour time limit means that i risk missing a match whenever I go adventuring for the weekend. I've lost many promising matches this way. They probably would have ended in tears anyway, but still...

The algorithm is literally designed to show you to a few people when you begin your profile, then disregard you until you pay for the subscription. After which, if you dont pay for the micro-transactions, it shows you to less and less people over time. Other apps utilize similar algorithms but only Bumble is as blatantly obvious in its use. You're much better off using Hinge, which is actually usable on a free account.

This app has become more predatory over the years. Have had a few good dates, but over time they've removed the requirement for women to message first, increased the cost of premium, and switched the spotlight system to 5 spotlights ($17) for a 2.5 hour boost instead of 2 spotlights. I'll go a few weeks without a like and without fail when my subscription ends one will pop up - and when I renew it's typically from someone well outside my 40+ mile area. At least Hinge seems more up front.

Too much is hidden behind unspoken paywalls. If they would tell you up front that you only have three compliments per day or you're only allowed to like one person out of the "for you" page, that knowledge would help you be more selective about who you're liking rather than just trying to keep your options open. The layout of the app itself is fine and straightforward, which I appreciate. I like the ability to leave Compliments which allows you to essentially message the person first.

Trying but still work to do. Take a note from Hinge, phone # blocking, allow backtrack and compliments (free) at least a couple week/month, allow age and race filters. It shouldn't be this hard to find someone that likes you. Endlessly swipe, and still never come across them. Should be first in que if this app is really about making connections. Discovery has potential. Needs to take into account past matches, likes, etc (filter would help). Get suggestions for women that aren't even close 😒
